As day breaks on the second day of competition in Beijing, a few loose ends from Day 1.
GYMNASTICS: It was a day of daredevil tricks at the men's team qualifying. Despite being named to the team just three days ago (after Morgan Hamm pulled out), American gymnast Sasha Artemev turned in a strong performance. He'll compete in the individual all-around and pommel horse finals too.
BOXING: Samoan light heavyweight Farani Tavui was removed from the ring on a stretcher after a third-round knockout by Marijo Sivolija-Jelica of Croatia. Tavui was unconscious on the mat after a hard right, and was taken to a local hospital.

Night has fallen in Beijing, with the last few competitions wrapping up. Here's a taste of what's happening there.
FENCING: The U.S. has its first 2008 gold medalist, as Mariel Zagunis (above) defended her 2004 championship and won the women's sabre competition. The nation has its first medal sweep too, because Zagunis beat Sada Jacobson in two straight rounds in the final. Becca Ward won bronze.
SWIMMING: American Michael Phelps, aiming for a record eight medals, clipped his own Olympic record in the 400 meter IM (4:07.82). He's said that he wants to show the world something it's never seen before, and that's a good start.

It's already evening on the first day of competition. Here's the latest.
ARCHERY: Big scores on the first day of the women's tournament. Park Sung-hyun of South Korea, the 2004 gold medalist, tied a 12-year-old Olympic record and two countrywomen have the two next best scores.
JUDO: Judo weight classes are competed in a single day, and Romania's Alina Dumitru won the women's 48kg division. The final bout with Yanet Bermoy of Cuba lasted just 80 seconds. South Korea took its first gold of 2008 when Choi Minho won the 60kg class for men.

Mid-afternoon in Beijing. What's going on around the venues?
BASKETBALL: This blog strongly supports the Mali women's hoopsters. They finished last at the recent six-team Diamond Ball, and are only here due to a surprise upset at the African championships over Senegal. Today, mighty Mali nearly beat slightly less hapless New Zealand with a very strong 13-2 run in the fourth quarter, but had a few key turnovers late. The Tall Ferns iced the game after a hard hack at the end was called a flagrant. The final result, a famous 76-72 win for NZL. But Mali's uniforms are the real winners.
The Australian Opals thrashed Belarus by 19 in the early game.

The men's road race is underway in Beijing.
It's just past noon in Beijing on Day 1, let's see what's happening.
WEIGHTLIFTING: China is on the medal board, as Chen Xiexia won the 48kg women's weightlfting class. Silver to Sibel Ozkan (TUR), Chen Wei-Ling (TPE) gets bronze.
FOOTBALL: First uniform row of the Games: Brazil's men's team changed its uniforms because IOC rules state that no athlete may wear a federation logo. The Brazilians are extra-careful not to tick off the Games' governing body because it's one of the four finalists in the race for 2016 hosting duties.
