Day 11 is just beginning, with gold medals in athletics, cycling, diving, gymnastics, sailing, triathlon, weightlifting and wrestling being given out. It's also a day for one of the most anticipated football matches in Olympic history, but before things get too far ahead of themselves, here's a few leftovers from Day 10.

HANDBALL: This blog has been following the exploits of Denmark's national handball team, they of a surprise European championship while the three-time gold-winning women stay home to rebuild. In a "come through or be classified" match against world champions Germany, the Danes won 27-21 in what could only be described as a handball slapdown. Lasse Boesen (who plays for German handball powerhouse TBV Lemgo) scored eight goals, and the defense held high-scoring Michael Kraus (above) to six. Kraus had averaged eight in the previous four matches.

At the close of each day of competition, this blog will present the standings of all active team sports.

It's early evening on a clear day in Beijing, and a light day of competition turns into a busy evening. Here's a dinner hour update.

ATHLETICS: Absolutely no understating the tears, shock and heartbreak in China after Liu Xiang's failure to start in the men's 110m hurdles heats. This was a race that was four years in the making after an unexpected win at Athens 2004 turned him into an idealized hero, and to see Liu win was China's No. 1 Olympic wish in a recent poll taken by China Daily.

It's a beautiful afternoon in Virtual Olympicland, with clear skies and lots and lots of water polo inside. In this update, some ping-ponging and hoodwinking of Olympic proportions.

TABLE TENNIS: Today was the first day of the women's singles tournament. A total of 56 nations are competing in table tennis in Beijing, up very sharply from the 35 that attended in Athens. The increase is due to a more conscious effort to include athletes from developing nations, and there were a lot of rude awakenings in the preliminary round.

Nearly all of the African and Middle Eastern players were quickly kicked off the bracket, hitting balls into nets, missing the table, whiffing on backhands. In the first-to-11, best-of-seven series, most were eliminated 4-0. Cecilia Otu Offiong of Nigeria lasted just 18 minutes with Australian Miao Miao (her real name). Victorine Agum Fomum, a Cameroonian player, managed just 14 points and was finished faster than an oven-baked pizza.

Day 10 is fully underway all across the Olympic city and beyond. A few key times to note (all China Standard): synchronized swimming kicks off (literally!) at 1300, the women's football semifinals begin at 1800, and the women's trampoline final is at 2025. In watchlisted team action, the Great Britain women's field hockey squad faces off against the U.S. at 1800, and the Danish men's handballers face a do-or-die final preliminary contest versus Germany at 1900. It's handball where we begin this update.

HANDBALL: One thing this blog has not done very well is respond to contact/feedback, which can be submitted through the link of that same title elsewhere on this page. As with any venture of this sort, most hasn't been worth answering. Some submissions have included wonderful questions, and others have provided even more wonderful answers. A few of them in the past several hours have inquired as to what in the hell this blog was talking about in regards to Chinese kids hugging handball players.
